About Novacef®

Novacef® manufacturer is Cipla. Novacef® active ingredient is Cefuroxime, a semisynthetic, broad-spectrum second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefuroxime is able cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike other cephalosporins.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Cefuroxime shows efficiacy against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus (including beta-lactamase-producing strains), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes); Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae (including beta-lactamase-producing strains), Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis (including beta-lactamase-producing strains), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (including beta-lactamase-producing strains); Spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi).

Cefuroxime is a cell wall inhibitor, that works by interfering with the synthesis of the bacteria cell walls. This causes the cell walls to rupture resulting in the death of the bacteria.

Adults and children (over 12 years of age):

Recommended dosage is 1 tablet of Cefuroxime 250 mg or 500 mg twice a day for 5-10 days.

The usual treatment duration is 5-10 days. Some infections may require longer treatment in order to prevent late complications.

For the treatment of early Lyme disease (an infection spread by infected ticks): 1 tablet of Cefuroxime 500 mg twice a day for 20 days.

Children (5-12years):

Recommended dosage is 125-250 mg twice a day for 5-10 days.

For acute otitis media (infection of the middle ear space, behind the eardrum): 1 tablet of Cefuroxime Actavis 250 mg twice a day for 5-10 days.
