About Reyataz

Rating of sales:

The active compound of Reyataz is Atazanavir – an anti-retroviral agent of the protease inhibitors (PIs) class. Atazanavir is normally given once a day and doesn't require multiple doses per day. It has fewer effects on the patient's lipid profile (cholesterol levels and other lipids in blood).

- treating HIV type 1 infection in combination with low dose Ritonavir in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Atazanavir is an azapeptide HIV-1 protease inhibitor (PI). Atazanavir selectively inhibits the virus-specific processing of viral Gag-Pol proteins in HIV-1 infected cells, thus averting formation of mature virions and infection of other cells. Atazanavir is not active against HIV-2.

The recommended standard treatment is Reyataz alongside Ritonavir, which ensures optimal pharmacokinetic parameters and level of virologic suppression.

Reyataz capsules must be taken with Ritonavir and have to be taken with food.

The capsules should be swallowed whole.

The recommended dose is 300 mg with Ritonavir 100 mg taken once daily with food.

Children 6-18 years (weighing at least 15 kg):

The recommended dose is based on body weight and should not exceed the recommended adult dose.

15-35 kg: 200 mg with Ritonavir 100 mg.

35 kg and more: 300 mg with Ritonavir 100 mg.

Pediatric patients at least 3 months of age and weighing at least 5 kg are given Atazanavir oral powder.

The withdrawal of Ritonavir from the Reyataz therapy is not recommended, but may be considered in adults at the dose of 400 mg once daily with food only under the following combined restrictive conditions: absence of prior virologic failure, undetectable viral load during the last 6 months under current regimen, viral strains not harbouring HIV resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) to current regimen.

HIV can be transmitted through sexual contact with HIV positive partner, blood (e.g., sharing needles, handling blood instruments, receiving blood transfusions, blood products, or organ/tissue transplants that were infected with HIV), childbirth, toiletries (razors and toothbrushes). Therefore, both HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals are advised to have any kind of sex using a latex or polyurethane condom, avoid sharing needles or other things like toothbrushes or razors. It is important to discuss with doctor the precautions needed to avoid infecting other people as well as take precautions not to get infected.

Women who are HIV-positive must not breastfeed because HIV infection can be passed on to the baby in breast milk.

Some people who take Reyataz may experience:

- Cholelithiasis (the formation of gallstones).

- Chronic kidney disease in HIV-infected patients. Regular monitoring of the renal function of patients should be maintained.

- Nephrolithiasis, that is associated with acute renal failure or renal insufficiency.

- Immune reactivation syndrome (severe immune deficiency during combination anti-retroviral therapy (CART) may lead to arousal of opportunistic infections and cause serious clinical conditions).

- Osteonecrosis (the death of bone tissue). Patients should seek medical advice if they experience joint aches and pain, joint stiffness or difficulty in movement.

- Rash and associated syndromes (mild-to-moderate maculopapular skin eruptions occurring within the first 3 weeks of starting therapy with Reyataz. Patients should seek medical advice if such signs and symptoms occur and should be monitored for skin reactions.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Reyataz to compensate the missed dose.
